Where PokerOps wins

  • A cloud platform — every screen in the room synced, not one Windows PC
  • Player registration over WhatsApp, plus barcode and scanner check-in
  • Dealer and floor device apps with a table-side screen
  • Multi-venue administration and staff roles under one login
  • Multilingual (each club picks its default), a free tier, and it runs in a recent browser (Mac, phone)

Where The Tournament Director may fit better

  • 22 years of unmatched configurability — a display engine with 100+ tokens, screen sets and on-screen action buttons
  • A powerful custom points-formula engine and mixed-game tournaments
  • A buy-once Personal license and fully offline operation after activation
  • Deep, mature exports to HendonMob, StatsGenie, RankingHero and more

What is The Tournament Director?

The Tournament Director (by Corey Cooper, in continuous development since 2004) is the best-known poker tournament software in the field — a Windows desktop program of remarkable depth. Automatic seating and dealer-button-aware balancing, seat locking, mixed-game tournaments, a custom points-formula engine, leagues and seasons with cross-tournament statistics, player bounties, and a display engine with over 100 information tokens, cycling screen sets and on-screen action buttons. It runs on one PC, offline after a one-time license check, and exports to HendonMob, StatsGenie and others.

How they differ

This is a desktop incumbent versus a cloud successor. The Tournament Director's configurability, after 22 years, is unmatched — if you want to shape a big-screen display token by token on a single offline Windows PC, nothing does it better, and we will not pretend otherwise.

PokerOps answers a different question: how the room runs today. It is a cloud platform, so the clock, seating and payouts are synced live to every screen — TV, tablet and phone — rather than driven from one PC. Players register over WhatsApp and check in by barcode; dealers and the floor work from device apps; a club runs multiple venues with staff roles under one login; and the interface is multilingual, with each club picking its default, runs on a Mac or a phone, and starts on a free tier. If your deciding factor is desktop depth and offline operation, The Tournament Director is superb. If it is running the room across every screen with your players and staff connected, that is what PokerOps is built for.

Choose PokerOps if

  • You want the whole room on every screen, run from the browser, in the cloud
  • You want WhatsApp registration, dealer devices and multi-venue administration
  • You want a Mac or a phone, or a free tier

Choose The Tournament Director if

  • You want maximum desktop configurability and a display you can shape token by token
  • You run on a single Windows PC and value fully offline operation
  • You prefer a one-time Personal license to a subscription and do not need cloud, devices or registration

Questions

Is there a cloud alternative to The Tournament Director?

Yes — PokerOps runs in a recent browser, syncing the clock, seating and payouts to every screen in the room, with player registration over WhatsApp. The Tournament Director is a single-PC Windows program.

Does The Tournament Director run on Mac or phones?

The vendor lists Windows 10/11 only, and its FAQ says a Mac version is not available at this time. PokerOps runs on Mac, Windows, tablets and phones through the browser.

How do the prices compare?

The Tournament Director is $49.99 one-time for a non-commercial Personal license, or $299.99 per year for a Commercial license. PokerOps is a cloud subscription with a free plan and flat monthly paid plans (see pricing), and no per-PC install.

Is The Tournament Director still being updated?

Yes. Despite claims that it is unchanged since 2021, the current build is v3.7.2 and its licensing terms were updated in August 2026. It remains actively maintained — the difference with PokerOps is cloud versus desktop, not abandoned versus active.
